Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, de 1948 à 1990, les championnats du monde avaient lieu tous les trois ans. Avant 1963 et après 1977, un match revanche était organisé en cas de défaite du champion en titre. En cas d'égalité après 24 parties, le champion conservait son titre ; Botvinnik et Kasparov profitèrent chacun de cette disposition
